A nursing and rehabilitation center combines two distinct but complementary types of care under one roof: skilled nursing (24-hour medical care) and rehabilitation therapy (physical, occupational, and speech therapy). Understanding what services are included helps families make informed decisions about post-hospital care.
Skilled Nursing Services
The nursing component of a nursing and rehabilitation center includes:
- 24-hour registered nursing coverage — RNs and LPNs available around the clock
- Medication management — administration, monitoring, and reconciliation of all medications
- Wound care — surgical wound management, pressure injury prevention and treatment, diabetic wound care
- IV therapy — intravenous antibiotics, fluids, and nutrition
- Catheter and ostomy care
- Pain management
- Chronic disease management — diabetes, COPD, heart failure, hypertension
- Physician coordination — daily nursing reports to attending physicians; specialist consultations arranged
- Laboratory and diagnostic services — blood draws, EKGs, and portable X-rays often available on site
Rehabilitation Services
Physical Therapy (PT)
Physical therapists focus on restoring mobility, strength, balance, and endurance. Common PT goals include walking independently, climbing stairs, and transitioning safely in and out of bed and chairs.
Occupational Therapy (OT)
Occupational therapists help patients relearn the activities of daily living — dressing, bathing, grooming, meal preparation — so they can function safely at home. OTs also evaluate the home environment and recommend adaptive equipment.
Speech-Language Pathology (SLP)
Speech therapists address three main areas: communication disorders (following stroke or neurological injury), swallowing dysfunction (dysphagia), and cognitive-communication impairments affecting memory and problem-solving.
Additional Services
- Dietary services — registered dietitian oversight, therapeutic diets, texture-modified diets for swallowing difficulties
- Social services — discharge planning, community resource referrals, family support, financial counseling
- Activities programming — group and individual activities, religious services, cognitive stimulation
- Respiratory therapy — oxygen management, ventilator weaning, nebulizer treatments
- Podiatry — foot care services, often on a rotating schedule
- Dental services — many facilities contract with visiting dentists
- Mental health services — psychology or psychiatry consultations for depression, anxiety, or adjustment disorders
What’s Covered by Medicare at a Nursing and Rehabilitation Center?
Medicare Part A covers all medically necessary skilled nursing and rehabilitation services during a qualifying short-term stay (following a 3-day hospital admission). This includes nursing care, all three therapy disciplines, medications, dietary services, and room and board — with no separate bills for individual services.
Medicare does not cover custodial care (help with daily activities without skilled medical need), personal items, or private room upgrades beyond the standard rate.
